Thai language: Numbers

Learning Thai numbers is similar to English in difficulty and structure.  The only real difference is with numbers greater than a thousand but less than a million.  You’ll find the list of Thai numbers below to help you learn to count in Thai.

1 = neung

2 = sawng

3 = sahm

A week ago I got a flyer in my mailbox announcing the opening of a new bar on Soi 13 called the Sport Bar.  It promised low prices, pool table, big screen TV and delicious food.  Thinking that this sounded like the kind of place that my friend the Dude would like, I called him to tell him about it.  Today, we made plans to meet there in the afternoon.

My phone rang as I was walking there.  The Dude had arrived and was not impressed.  He said that the bar was in the new “Trendy” Condo, and it had little character, no Sports theme, and was filled with unattractive girls who — to use the Dude’s word — “swarmed” him.  So, sadly, the Sport Bar does not find a place on the Werewolf Recommended list.

The Dude suggested we re-convene on Soi 11 at Cheap Charlies. 

 

I haven’t been there in a while, but I like Charlie’s bar.  It’s an outdoor bar that has been described as looking like a pile of driftwood that’s washed up on shore.  It’s a Bangkok institution that’s been around for 25 years.  There is an old newspaper article from the International Herald Tribune (July 05) that is laminated and posted on the front of the bar, with a headline that says, Cheap Charlie’s Rules: stay inside the yellow line, no prostitution, and no number 2.

If you’ve been to Cheap Charlie’s before then you’ll understand the headline; if you haven’t then you need to go.  Again, Charlie’s is a Bangkok institution in the same way that Harry’s Cafe de Wheels is a Sydney institution.  A place that falls short of all expectations, and is so unique that it defies description.  A place you’d never imagine until you’ve seen it.
