Moving Day #1

Monday night I helped a good friend of mine move to a new apartment. She’s a Thai girl, and she has spent the last five years sharing a small one-room apartment with her cousin, living on very low wages, and for much of last year, being supported by her parents while she went to English school full time. She’s never been a bar girl. Before moving to Bangkok five years ago, she lived her entire life with her family in Isaan.

Living with her cousin, her half of the rent was 1,500 baht per month. In her new place it she will pay the full 3,000 baht (US$91) per month herself. Its a lot of money for her, but she just finished her 3-month probation period in her new job, so she’s quietly optimistic that she’ll be able to afford it.
