As so often happens, I was reading theFARANGspeaks2much website and ran across something good.
Smitty offered a link to a website with ten free Thai lessons. He said that he would check it out and report back.
Being the impatient type, I tested it myself this morning and I am happy to recommend this site as a great way to learn the basics of Thai.
Each lesson is bite-sized, with about a dozen words, one or two simple grammar points, and exercises to consolidate your learning. It is well put together, and includes sound so you can HEAR the correct pronunciation of the words – something you can’t get from books.
You get your choice of phonetic spellings (karaoke Thai) or actual Thai script. There was nothing in the vocabulary or grammar in the 10 free lessons that was new to me, so I used the Thai script to do the exercises. It was helpful for me to consolidate and clarify my reading ability in Thai script.
I was impressed enough that I clicked on the link at the end that says, “We have more lessons available here”. The course list covers material I already know, so I won’t be buying the course, but with very reasonable pricing, I recommend this as a great way to learn some Thai. I really liked the presentation and style of this site.
Here was the price list:
Vocabulary Course – 30 lessons – 60 days – 199 baht
Tourist Course – 30 lessons – 60 days – 299 baht
Expat Course – 40 lessons – 60 days – 399 baht
Complete Course – 60 lessons – 90 days – 499 baht
If you are interested in some basic Thai language skills, I think this is a great place for you to go.

I can recommend Benjawan Poomsam Becker’s three books and CDs, starting with “Thai For Beginners”. The problem with Thai is how to deal with the transliteration of Thai script into English. There is an official transliteration (WW discusses this somewhere in the blog) but it’s not the easiest for beginners. Believe me, I’ve done them all!
Becker’s books, in my opinion, are about the best of the lot. Becker encourages you to learn the script, but the book also caters for those who just want to ask the lady whether she fucks on first dates, without offending her ears.
I have a pretty good link somewhere discussing the various Thai courses and language schools in Bangkok. I’ll see if I can dig it out.

I’ve just had a look at the 10 lessons, and did the first two. I concur with WW’s opinion…nice tight little package for anybody who knows zero Thai. Any more than that, though, and you’re likely to find it too basic.
It’s got clear instructions and easy links, pretty good transliteration, and nice clear listening tests. $16 seems like a good deal to me.

I also use this site: http://learn-thai-podcast.com/ . The good thing is that you can download the lessons as mp3 files. I’ve put them on my mp3 player and listen each day on my way to/from work.

it is cool stuff and nice to see someone use technology to help sort some of this out.
I also like they ahve the thai script there as well.
I think the fastest way to get better at thai is to try and learn to read.
nice…
