It’s been a long wait, but the day has finally come.
I’ve had to endure seven months without The Big Mango Bar. Thirty-one and a half weeks without the California Burger, or my beloved JalapeƱo Burger. Two hundred and twenty-one days without my amorous advances being rejected by Nid the cashier, etc and so on.
But at long last, the all-new Big Mango Bar, now located just off Sukhumvit Soi 4 (as you walk up soi 4 from Sukhumvit, turn left between Jools’ and The Tavern), will be opening its doors for business for the first time at 4pm today (barring any last-minute hitches)! As of tomorrow, the opening hours will be 10am-late. And yes, “late” is vague, but then so are the whims of Lumpini’s Finest…
Then And Now
For those who never had the pleasure of drinking in it, the old Big Mango Bar was a beer bar above Lucky Luke’s at Nana Plaza, and was my favourite spot to watch football, drink beer, eat cheeseburgers, shoot some pool, and escape the chaos of Nana Plaza without straying too far from the action.
The bar’s owners, Smitty and pmmp, also run the Mango blog – The FARANG Speaks 2 Much, now Bangkok’s finest blog. Since I retired, that is. Except I’ve come out of retirement for the next six weeks, haven’t I? So I guess it’s the second-best again until some point in mid-July…
I’ve been fortunate enough to receive a guided tour of the new bar already – like me, it’s bigger, better, and sexier than ever before. The pool tables are back (and on free-play throughout June), there are more TV screens just in time for England’s valiant Euro 2008 campaign (What? Eh? Oh…), and draught beer now lines up alongside the usual bottled suspects, including the unfeasibly tasty Beer Lao.
The main difference most people will be talking about is that the new bar is targetting freelance working girls – this will obviously take a while to get off the ground, so don’t expect to be swarmed by ladies of the night just yet, but the future looks very rosy indeed for the all-new Big Mango Bar.
The Details
From the horse’s mouth:
- This is a “soft” opening. We will have a Grand Opening Party mid-June
- The kitchen is not open yet but will be for the Grand Opening
- Doors open at 4:00pm
- Happy Hour all night
- Draft Heinken Pint 99b and Tiger Pint 89b all night every night
- Free Pool for the month of June
- Map
Okay, that should be good enough for a free pint.
Some proper articles coming soon, honest…

Some guys will do anything for a pint of beer…

what’s wrong with Nid?
June 3, 2008 at 1:47 pm |
I don’t think there’s anything wrong with her?
June 3, 2008 at 2:57 pm |
so is it just you, or does she wet blanket everyone?
June 3, 2008 at 3:06 pm |
Ah, sorry – I understand now.
Must be everyone. I see no conceivable way in which she could justify rejecting me whilst accepting the advances of lesser mortals.
And anyone who says otherwise is lying.

…. great to see you blogging again and… oh hang on… Yes Nid?… you’re going now?.. ok I’ll get my wallet… what do you mean you want to pay me…. oh ok… yes I guess thats true, I am that good…

Just returned home from a few bottles of Beer Laos and I have to say that this bar has all of the ingredients of being the # 1 venue for those us that really like to have a few, some decent conversation and a little bit of eye candy without all of the bullshit one has to put up with. Congratulations to the troops they are well on their way to having a first class bar, can’t wait for the kitchen to get up and running.

What they need is some kind of challenge to draw customers in. Maybe first customer to bag Nid gets a free case of beer lao?
June 4, 2008 at 12:33 pm |
Ahh Nid! Now that’s a very good reason for coming back to the BM (and the burgers of course).
June 4, 2008 at 1:00 pm |
nid is off limits. Deal.
the man – thanks for the kind words. U made my day.
Thanks to bbb – good seeing u last night. burger soon.

June 4, 2008 at 9:57 pm |
I never partook at the original venue but wont be missing out this time around. Hope to meet some of you there next time I’m in BKK for a visit.

i didnt realise nid was a challenge. I went there in the old mango days and had a lot of fun. Top girl on all fronts.
June 5, 2008 at 10:24 am |
On all fronts, eh! What about behind?

Bangkok Bad Boy: Five days have past since Wolfie left the blog in your hands and there has been NOTHING of substance or interest.
If you are unable to come up with anything new to write about, may I suggest re posting few of your old classics.
Has the magic gone ?
And what is all the fuss about Nid ?
There are pictures of her on the Big Mango website. She is a [edit: "delightful human being" -BBB].

@Manny: Ah, my first hate-mail, I was waiting for that one. Glad we got it out of the way
I already said in my introduction that I am not Werewolf. That guy is insanely prolific. I am not.
Werewolf aims to post pretty much every day. On my original website, I posted 2-3 pieces a week.
On this website, as Werewolf and I both already announced, I’ll be aiming for the same rate I managed before. I can’t write in his style, and I can’t write at his speed. I’m different. Sorry.
I currently have nine articles in the pipeline, in various stages of completion – the first in the queue (currently at 968 words, it’ll be 1500 when I’m done) will hopefully hit tomorrow, but it could be Saturday depending on Real Life. That would be 3 pieces in 6 days, so actually ahead of target, if we’re counting…
On my old site, I always worked with at least a couple of half-written pieces in the ‘Drafts’ folder that I could polish off and post if I lacked inspiration. Now, I’m starting from cold. Give me a week or two to warm up, and then see what you think.
I’m never going to be able to post every day, and I’ve never claimed otherwise – but I think you’ll enjoy what I come up with, if you can grant me a little patience!
PS. Nid is a goddess, and I think we’ve probably embarassed her enough. Negative comments on that front deleted, as she’ll never marry me otherwise.

BBB: I’d hate to be in your shoes.
The pressure on you must be intense as readers expectations are enormous !
Please allow me to voice my opinion with regard to the content of your coming blogs.
Contrary to what BBKenny advised you on TFS2M, I have no doubt that the readers of this blog will be extremely happy to hear, and even if it’s for the millionth time, about a blowjob at Lolita’s, having a treesome at Eden club or a soapy on Petchabury.
We LOVE dirt and graphic descriptions. WW does it frequently.
My sincere apology to Nid for what I wrote.
I’m sure she’s a nice person. It’s just that I feel one can get much better “value” for the money elsewhere…
June 6, 2008 at 6:37 am |
Poor Nid. What have I started?? T’was just an innocent inquiry to begin with.
Nid-jaaar, kor tort na khrup
June 6, 2008 at 5:27 pm |
@Manny: no worries.
Not feeling any pressure really – it just takes me a long time to write a piece of any length that I’m happy with. I have a ton of subjects that I want to cover, and I can assure you I’ll get there eventually. Just try not to expect posts every day, or even every other day – at least until Werewolf gets back.
On that front, I telephoned the man himself from the Big Mango Bar Soft Opening (FX: screeching tyres, as I veer back on-topic), and he sounds well. The only problem is that his plan to keep in touch with the site via the shiny new wireless/cellphone arrangement he mentioned here has been slightly impeded by him accidentally leaving the adapter behind in Bangkok. D’oh.
Next article is running at 1375 words as I type this, the end is in sight. Should be up today.
@swampthing: No worries. I started it in the article, not you. The intention was for me to be the butt of the joke though, not her!
June 6, 2008 at 5:50 pm |
hey wats the fuss about nid is she some sort of amazing person why everyone want here is she available or taken for
June 6, 2008 at 7:53 pm |
@spike: She was the cashier at the old Big Mango, and now works in the new bar.
She was something of an “internet personality” for a while, partly due to this interview with her on the Mango site from last year:
http://www.2thebigmango.com/main/2007/03/26/mango-weekly-25-march-2007/
(scroll down)
New piece going up now – it ran to over 2000 words in the end. My fingers hurt. Hope Manny likes it.
June 6, 2008 at 8:29 pm |
so is she bar finable now then
June 6, 2008 at 8:34 pm |
Smitty says “off limits” (above), so I guess not.
June 6, 2008 at 8:45 pm |
why that who smitty
June 6, 2008 at 8:48 pm |
Smitty, aka dreampipe (comment #11, above) is one of the owners of The Big Mango Bar, and hence Nid’s boss.
June 6, 2008 at 8:49 pm |
ah right fare enough
June 6, 2008 at 8:51 pm |
how come she off limits
June 6, 2008 at 10:15 pm |
i no why she is off limits as she is my wife
