Three `years ago I stayed with a freelancer for a few weeks instead of a hotel. We basically played boyfriend-girlfriend for the duration of my 3-week holiday. I bought her some new clothes and she got her hair colored while I was there. She wanted photos of both, so I took out my camera and took nearly a roll of film inside her apartment.
I still have those pictures. While the camera is focused on her in all these photos, you can get a sense of what the apartment was like.
A nice sofa. This was a real leather sofa, and very comfortable. I used to sit down and never want to get up again.
She had a nice, decent sized refrigerator with the ubiquitous plush dolls on top.
And a very large home entertainment area that separated her living room and bedroom. Because the apartment had this for separation instead of a wall, it had a light, airy feel about it. You can see she had a nice TV and large stereo system. If you look closely you’ll see more toys and plush dolls everywhere.
A queen-sized bed and more plush dolls.
You don’t see much of the room here, but you can see that she had built-in wardrobes, large windows for the bedroom, and even more plush dolls.
You can see from the photos that the apartment was roomy — about 55 square meters I think — and it had a small but useful balcony and a nice farang-friendly bathroom.
This girl was a working freelancer, but I stayed in her room for three weeks. She woke up every morning between 7 and 8 a.m. and cleaned the apartment thoroughly, washing dishes, sweeping, making the bed and taking out the rubbish. She cooked lunch and dinner for me every day, and she was a talented and enthusiastic cook. You can probably see enough of her room to tell that she took a lot of pride in herself and the place she lived, and that she lived quite comfortably.
I asked her how much she paid in rent, and it was around 8,400 baht per month (2005).
A farang friend was looking for an apartment recently and I took him to the same building. We saw a room that was similar to this one in size, but in much poorer condition, and the manager quoted us 9,000 per month.
So, De La Munte and the rest of you… it’s not all dreary news for the girls. Some of them live quite nicely.
Most of them live in pretty crap conditions, but when I think back to my university days and the dormitory and small apartments I lived in, I’m not sure I lived any better when I was 20 years old.
The standard for most bar girls is for two girls to share a room of about 25 square meters, sleeping in the same bed together. This may sound terrible, but one thing to understand is that Thai people usually hate living alone. They may not love sharing a bed but it’s not really the torture that it might be for two westerners living in close quarters.
They usually have a decent TV, and often a DVD player. They will usually have an MP3 player, so they may or may not use a stereo. They may have a small ‘boom box’ for playing CDs. They may or may not have a small bar-fridge. They will have a fan, a squat toilet and a small balcony for cooking and washing & drying clothes by hand. There will be little else. This will usually cost each girl between 1,500 and 2,000 per month.
But, as you can see from the photos, my friend is renting a nice room on her own for less than 3,000 per month, and the freelancer in 2005 had a roomy and well appointed 1-bedroom apartment for less than 9,000 per month.
The way they actually live is often dependent on how important the comfort is to them in relation to other things like money for the family, school fees, etc.
I’m going to try to find some girls to let me take photos of some more humble homes. I’ll aim to get shots of the third floor of a Soi Cowboy go go bar and maybe some of the smaller and dingier places. That may take some time, but if I succeed, you’ll be the first to know.

Why do the girls have to live in such appalling conditions ?
2-3 customers per month + tips & lady drinks commissions should easily cover all their living expenses. The rest is money in the bank.
I have no doubt that some of the better looking girls make it in one night.
They can’t be as poor as we think they are.

These girls can live well if they choose to; I would think that the two sets of photos I posted show that their conditions are far from ‘appalling’.
For the ones that do live in very bad conditions, I can suggest a few ideas. I’m sure that others can offer more or better ideas.
1. Sending money to family. Many of these girls have babies. They go to work and send money back home to pay for all the expenses of raising their children. Even when they don’t need to support a child, the reason they came to Bangkok to work in a bar is so that they can take care of their families back in Isaan. Nearly EVERY girl is paying for, or has paid for, a house for the family. My ex girlfriend had paid for one — we’re talking about minimum 1 million baht to build a home for mom, dad & the rest.
Even when they have finished paying for the house they are called on to pay for a truck , motorcycle and more for the family. The demand can be tremendous.
Why don’t they keep more money themselves? Firstly, Thai culture teaches them to take care of parents first — being born is a debt they can never repay. Also, the entire reason they came to Bangkok was to earn the money to support the family. There are lots of issues there.
2. These girls grew up dirt poor and have little education and no experience with money. When they finally have some from the job, they spend it all. It can pay for clothes, makeup and jewellry, or whiskey, drugs and gambling.
They are working as prostitutes, so they need to look good and that takes money. Also, they are working as prostitutes, and even in Thailand that carries a certain social stigma which may lead to issues with self-esteem that are dealt with through spending cash on ‘luxuries’ or ‘vices’.
A simpler explanation of the spending is simple lack of discipline.
3. There is also the difference of priorities. For many Thais (I’m thinking of those who grew up in Isaan farms) the living conditions they have now are probably better than — and almost certainly no worse than — what they grew up with. Many TGs don’t want airconditioning. It either makes them uncomfortable, they believe it will make them sick, or it simply seems to expensive. Almost universally they don’t want hot water. They have spent their lives in a tropical country taking cool showers. They will turn off the water heater when they visit a farang apartment. They often prefer squat toilets… the position is one they spend most of their lives in, and it feels natural to most Asian people. They enjoy sharing rooms; Thais get twitchy at the thought of living alone. They simply don’t put the same value on many of the things that farang feel are important, so they see a dollar spent on better accommodation as a dollar taken away from something more important — usually that means the cash sent back home.
4. TGs will often be the ONLY one working in the family. In addition to mom, dad & a baby, they may be supporting a husband/boyfriend who isn’t working, and several brothers and sisters who are unemployed or underemployed.
I once had a girl tearfully explain to me that she didn’t mind taking care of her mom & brother, but that her father came around every month with his hand out for 30,000 baht . He used the money to pay for his own whiskey, but also had two more minor wives and spent most of his time with these two families (the younger wives) as her mom was his first wife. She felt aggrieved that she was called on to support her half brothers and sisters. This girl was NOT asking me for money… just talking to me.
Even my friend whose room is in the photo above told me that as soon as she started getting paid at her new job, her older brother called and said he didn’t have money for food for his family. She sent him a thousand baht. A week later he called looking for more. The same week her best friend here in Bangkok whom she’s known since they were children called to ask to borrow 4,000 baht for rent money.
Friends and family know when a girl is earning money, and the demands for loans and gifts increases sharply. In Thailand they are expected to help those who need it because they are in a position to do so, and its a rare girl who will fight that culture.
5. Ignorance. Many girls simply live where their best friend lives, or where their sister suggested they go. They do no research or comparison. They wouldn’t know how to. They didn’t grow up in Bangkok, and they don’t know their way around. We have a first hand account from DLM about a girl’s room that was horrible, but was the same price and in the same neighborhood as my friend’s fairly nice room. Doubtless, she has her reason for living where she does, and I’ll bet it involves the advice of a friend or sister.
So, there are five quick ideas for you. Its a rare bar girl who saves or invests for herself. Between family, friends, bad habits, ignorance and excessive spending they normally go through their cash. They earn a lot, but they don’t typically spend it on accommodation preferring to spend it on things they value more highly.
When my ex-girlfriend was living rent-free in the third floor of her go go bar, she was earning 30K to 70K per month (avg of say 50), which is more than the average English teacher in Bangkok, and a fortune by Isaan standards. She paid for a house, truck and a couple of motorcycles for the family back home. She drank the rest.
Even now she has an overseas sponsor. The family demands a minimum of 10K per month, but I see her with thousands of baht from the sponsor every month. She lives in a room that I’ve already described… a hovel by most standards that costs her around 3k per month. For 6K she could live pretty well, but she’ll say she can’ t afford it. At the same time, I see her go out with 3K for an evening and come back with no cash but full of whiskey. She will invite me to go for a massage and when I say its outside my budget, she’ll pay 1K for the two of us to get 2 hours each. But she can’t afford a better room.
The building she lives in is where an older friend of hers from her hometown lived. She wanted to be close to her.
She’s been in Pattaya for about 6 months now. She can’t find a shopping mall or movie theatre. She recently told me about her sponsor coming to town and taking her out to one of the major landmark places in the main area of the beach, and asking me if I knew about it. It would have been hard not to, yet she had been there for half a year before seeing it. Trust me when I say that she’s either too lazy or ignorant to find a better room.
I have to shower and go to work now. Have a great day!

The best investment mom and dad can make… The more girls the better…
Couple of ‘working’ daughters and the parents can afford a holiday trip around the world !
Something is rotten in this society.

most of the gogo and soapie girls i know make upwards of 40k baht/month.
after that, subtract the monthly payments back home to the family for the car/house/baby/whiskey/gambling debt/sick buffalo/etc, the beauty salon costs, they are left with roughly half the amount for rent, food, fun, whatever. i found that most of them rent rooms for about 3k baht/month which includes a bed, aircon (which is rarely used), and a small bathroom.
not appalling but as werewolf mentinoed…not much different than a college dorm.
compare that to the 10k baht or so a typical thai makes working in the supermarket, hotel, factory, or restaurant (fuji, mk, etc). the BGs are making quite a bit of loot. but also as werewolf pointed out…they aren’t financially savvy, spending whatever money they make with little or none saved up at all.

WW – the difference between the room I’ve seen and the apartments from your pics is pretty much the difference between a cave and Hilton. They really don’t have anything in common.
Re: the rent this girl told me she was paying – I really can’t be sure that she was telling me the truth. I’ve been nice to her and I really didn’t mind spending some extra thousands baht for her – clothes, present for mum/dad, clubs, restaurants. (ehhhh, I know – stupid farang
, but it was a conscious exercise and I enjoyed it). On the other hand during the last days we spent together, I got the impression that she was playing various small scams/tricks on me just to extract some extra baht (not really a big surprise here). So she might have quoted a higher rent value just to have a reason to ask for a bit more from me. I might be wrong but …..
Anyway – I recall that she was saying that around 4500baht she could rent something nice and very close to BTS station. This seems to be more consistent with your info.

The world viewed through Western eyes is often distorted by the privilege of excess and the isolation of selfishness. Thai women are often masters at squeezing value out of their earnings because they have to and they want to.
The worst thing that can happen to a Thai woman, in my opinion, is to have a Western man spoil her with excessive amounts of money or frivolous gifts. She will then lose her bearings on maintaining the life that suits her best.
This is a great blog post because it is educational and tell more about “true” Thai culture than 99.9% of the “blog bla bla” out there on the internet.
Thanks for sharing this.

re: manny: “They can’t be as poor as we think they are.”
When it comes to earning capability I reckon that it can be a wide difference among the BGs/freelancers. It depends on looks, skills, but also on low/high season, luck, and lots of other things. The girl I mentioned before was working only on weekends, because during the week she was going to Uni. Also – she was not working when she had to prepare for exams. During my visit it was low season and she was telling me that many times she and her girlfriends can’t find customers…. I believe that some of these girls really don’t earn a lot…
I haven’t seen one TG who doesn’t have a mobile at least 7 times more expensive than mine. And the amount of time these girls spend talking to their friends is ridiculous. Even if the cost/min is cheap in Thailand, one TG told me that she spent even 3600baht on phone calls/month. (This TG actually has a job and is not a BG)
Also – no matter how much they earn, they will spend everything. WW is spot on with the reasons listed above. I would add only one more:
Mobile Phones

re: ohatam: “The worst thing that can happen to a Thai woman, in my opinion, is to have a Western man spoil her with excessive amounts of money or frivolous gifts. ”
Ohhhhh .. at the end of the day probably this can be extended to include Any woman
Definately I understand what you mean, but I reckon that many times it might be difficult to decide what is excessive. If I just start by comparing the daily rate earned by a office TG with the average short-time rate ….

WW – sorry but I can’t help myself adding another comment before going to sleep. Is not really about this post – it fits more under the “Bar girls are people 2″ category.
re: your comments: “Also, they are working as prostitutes, and even in Thailand that carries a certain social stigma which may lead to issues with self-esteem ”
It was something that somehow touched me in an unexpected way in regards to this girl. Even if she had worked in bars and as a freelancer for the previous 4 years, she was constantly preoccupied with what other Thai people were thinking about her. Expecially when we were not in the Sukhumvit area – she constantly had the impression that other Thais were starring at her and were judging her. Many times she was thinking that she was dressed too revealing -although her rather tight jeans/tshirt was nothing exagerate to me. To make things a bit funnier, sometimes when she was coming to Nana from home – she was wearing “decent thai” clothes while on the train, then she was going to the toilet and dress into something else. (…again.. pretty decent to me anyway..). Even if she was a prostitute for quite some time – in an unexpected way, something was very delicate about her.
Please don’t judge me too harsly for my comments, when it comes to Thailand I’m still a newbie

thanks for posting this WW, it truly is interesting.
as far as some of the other comments out there, these conditions are really not bad at all. it’s just a matter of your perspective. i have been living in indonesia for the past year and i have been in some rooms that are far more simple than the ones shown in this post.
i’m not saying that these thai girls are well off but compared to some of the places i have seen they are doing pretty well even if they are sending a lot of their cash home. in Bali i know girls who have finished uni and are working in hotels where they only bring in 200 – 300 USD per month. the rent they pay is probably between 50 – 60 USD per month for a simple room. No A/C, concrete walls, tile floor with no real bathroom only squat toilet and a bucket for washing separated by a wall.
if a girl in bangkok is bringing in 40k baht per month she cant be doing that bad.
